How do I decide what size lift chair is right for me?

Primary Indoor Use

Seat-to-floor height: Measure from the top of the back of the user’s knee to the floor.

Seat depth: Measure the horizontal distance from the back of a seat to the back of the user’s knee while seated.

Backrest height: Measure the vertical distance from the base of a seat to the to the top of the user’s head while seated.

Seat width: Measure the horizontal distance between the hips while seated. For a more comfortable fit, we recommend adding a couple of inches for wiggle room.

The space in your home: Measure the space where you plan to use this unit in your home. Refer to the overall width of the chair to determine if the chair will fit in your home.

Distance to the wall: Your lift chair will need to be a minimum of 13 inches, up to 21 inches (depending on the model), from the wall to enable the chair to go into the recline position.

Below are ranges. We recommend that you check each specific chair for the exact measurements.

What Chair Position(s) Do You Need

Follow the recommended list above for primary indoor mobility scooter use.

Choosing the chair with the correct number of positions can be confusing. Not sure what all of this means? Check out our Pride® Power Lift Recliner Guide.

2-Position (TV Recline)

  • Lifted
  • Seated
  • Reading

The 2-position TV recline is achievable on all Pride® and VivaLift® Power Recliners. This is a comfortable position for performing many relaxing activities. Read a book, watch television, work on your tablet or enjoy conversation with family and friends with a 2-position lift chair.

3-Position Full Recline

  • Lifted
  • Seated
  • Reading
  • Napping

The 3-position full recline is available on most Pride and all VivaLift! Power Lift Recliner models and puts you in a position ideal for napping or relaxing.

Infinite Position

  • Lifted
  • Seated
  • Reading
  • Napping
  • Relaxing

An infinite position Power Lift Recliner enables the backrest and footrest to move independently from one another so that a variety of positions can be reached. Infinite position chairs are great for taking a nap. Some models may have the Trendelenburg position, which elevates one’s feet higher than their head for increased comfort and relaxation. Other models may have zero gravity positioning where one’s thighs and lower legs are higher than one’s torso.

Learn if You Qualify for Lift Chair Recliner Medicare Coverage

Schedule a face-to-face examination with your doctor or other treating physician. You must obtain a prescription for the seat lift mechanism from your doctor before Medicare helps pay for a lift chair.

Your authorized Pride provider has a special form that your physician must fill out. Take this form (or have your provider send it) to your doctor. It contains several questions about your condition that will help determine whether Medicare may cover it.

To qualify for the seat lift mechanism under Medicare, review the following Medicare stipulations:

  • You must have severe arthritis of either the hip or knee or have severe neuromuscular disease. Your doctor will determine this
  • The seat lift mechanism must be a part of your doctor’s treatment plan to either help improve your condition or slow down or stop the progression of your condition
  • You must be unable to stand up from a regular armchair or any chair in your home
  • Once standing, you must be able to walk, even if you use a cane or walker to do so
  • Medicare will not cover a lift chair if you are in the hospital or are in a skilled nursing facility
